Children’s Educational App Concept for Thesis Project

Goober is an educational app prototype designed to make language learning more accessible and engaging for children. The concept focuses on language differentiation and interactive learning tools, helping parents introduce and reinforce language skills while supporting their child’s language development.

Goober is designed for parents and toddlers aged 2–6 from bilingual families who are interested in introducing and developing their child’s understanding of a second language, particularly their family’s mother tongue. The application focuses primarily on sequential bilingual learning, where children build on their existing knowledge of one language as they develop another. Rather than developing a fully functioning application, the project focuses on key interface screens and features presented through an interactive Adobe XD prototype. Due to XD’s limitations with animation and audio, certain interactive elements are demonstrated through an edited video incorporating After Effects.

Preliminary Sketches

Digital Iterations

Due to XD’s limitations with animation and audio, certain interactive elements are demonstrated through an edited video incorporating After Effects. The design process centres on developing an educational framework to guide the app’s structure and learning activities, while exploring various user interface approaches suited to young children. This includes experimenting with colour palettes, illustration styles, typography, and potential names and logo concepts to establish a cohesive visual identity. Character development and supporting narratives also play an important role, giving the app’s characters purpose while creating an engaging storytelling experience that reinforces the educational content.
